Alternative to Uber by Chelle starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Humor

Warning(s): Graphic Language, Lemon

Length: 7 parts, 70,000+ words

Summary: Join Stephanie, a woman who can talk to things that no one else can, as she tries to make a life for herself in San Francisco.

Status: complete

Added: July 22, 2006

Link(s): The Athenaeum

Comments: This story is hilarious, absolutely hilarious. It's a satire of uber Xena fanfics. It's also very strange. Stephanie is a former Army sergeant turned bomb diffuser who can hear cars talk (and animals both domesticated and wild). With her best friend Brittanie the Desoto, she travels to San Francisco after leaving the Army to make a new life.

Cooking On High by Creme Brulee star

Type: Alternative

Rating: T

Genre(s): Drama, Humor, Romance

Warning(s): n/a

Length: 9 parts, 50,000+ words

Summary: (from the Athenaeum) A notorious chef is going through a difficult life transition. Things were complicated enough before she was accused of murdering a woman she barely knew. And they're complicated further by a waitress she can't shake, who may be after more than her secret recipes. Join our uber gals on a race through a small tourist town as they hunt down a killer while being chased by a posse of bad guys.

Status: complete

Added: July 22, 2006

Link(s): The Athenaeum

Comments: French is a sociopath while Fry is a naive waitress, but they complement each other perfectly. This fanfic is very funny, actually, and French and Fry banter back and forth like they have a professional comedy routine.

I Found My Heart in San Francisco by S. X. Meagher starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Drama, Humor, Romance

Warning(s): Graphic Language, Lemon

Length: 16 novels + short stories

Summary: Two female Berkeley students meet and fall in love.

Status: incomplete

Added: October 07, 2007

Link(s): Royal Academy of Bards, The Bard's Corner

Comments: There aren't words to describe how good this series is. It takes place in contemporary California and deals with many different issues people are still trying to deal with today. There will be 26 stories total, I believe, and all of them will be novel length. You can buy some of the novels in printed form. See her website for more info. The Royal Academy of Bards has all of them while The Bard's Corner doesn't.

The Dar and Kerry Series by Melissa Good starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: T

Genre(s): Drama, Humor, Romance

Warning(s): Graphic Language

Length: 8 novels + short stories

Summary: This series is about two gay women living in contemporary Miami.

Status: incomplete

Added: July 22, 2006

Link(s): Author's Site

Comments: Melissa Good (Merwolf) is the genius behind the Journey of Soulmates alternative Xena series. She's also written scripts for the Xena TV show. Dar is an executive at one of the largest computer corporations in the United States and Kerry's much smaller business is acquired by them. She's all set to give up her job so that her employees won't have to suffer when Dar finds a way to keep her on staff. They find themselves growing closer against their wills, first becoming best friends, and then later becoming lovers.

Mists of Fate by Dan Kirk star

Type: Alternative

Rating: M

Genre(s): Action/Adventure, Drama

Warning(s): Graphic Violence

Length: 35 chapters, 100,000+ words

Summary: A new race of beings known as the "Shapers" rise to take control of an Earth devastated by the collapse of modern civilization.

Status: complete

Added: July 22, 2006

Link(s): Dabeagle's Doghouse

Comments: The United States commits an act of desperation by trying to ruin the oil reserves of a certain Arabian nation. Unfortunately, this backfires and ruins every oil reserve on the planet. Earth is thrown back into the Dark Ages since very few things work without oil and most countries are now under martial law.

The pulse that ruined the oil also transformed men who satisfied certain criteria into a new race of beings with extraordinary mental power. They eventually come to be known as the "Shapers", people who magically shape themselves and the world around them to their exact specifications.

The Chosen by Silvenfox starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Action/Adventure, Drama, Humor, Romance

Warning(s): Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Lemon

Length: 3 novels + 2 side-stories

Summary: (from the author) Such power. So many new responsibilities. Too bad no one consulted Chad Summers when he was discovered as the new champion of magic. In his whole life he's never gotten into a fight. Now he has to kill monsters, demons and creatures that can bring insanity with a look. This was so going to put a damper on his social life.

Status: incomplete

Added: May 29, 2013

Link(s): Author's Site, Nifty

Comments: It's obvious that the author is a big fan of anime as there are aspects of it throughout the series. The protagonist himself is a big anime/sci-fi/fantasy nerd (Sailor Teleport!). Chad's ultimate attack, The Giga Annihilation Program, reminds me of Lina Inverse's Giga Slave (Slayers). They both have the potential to wreak havoc upon the world if used.

If you love anime like Bleach then you'll also love this story.

The Crystal Throne Series by Bert McKenzie starstar

The Journal Entries of Kennet R'Yal Shardik by Elf Sternberg starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Angst, Drama, Humor, Romance

Warning(s): BDSM, Graphic Language, Lemon

Length: 335 parts, 500,000+ words

Summary: A geneticist named Ken Shardik is approached by an alien entity that gives him the power to create his own world.

Status: complete

Added: July 22, 2006

Link(s): Author's Site, Nifty

Comments: This is a story of epic proportions that's been in progress since 1990 and has been updated every year since. Many of the stories contain sex but there are many that do not. Some of the stories are gay-themed, some of them lesbian-themed, and some of them are neither. There's a little bit of everything in here, really. The basic premise of the story is this: a geneticist named Ken creates his own world and his own races of people who come to consider him their "father". It's very interesting to see how the Earthlings (or Terrans, as they're known in this story) deal with a dozen different races of animal-like people with highly-advanced technology. I'm not doing this story any justice with my comments so you'll just have to read it and see for yourself.

The author's site has all of them; as an alternative, you can visit Nifty.

The Mechanic by Jonas Mec starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Drama, Romance

Warning(s): Lemon

Length: 15 chapters, 100,000+ words

Summary: A Kansas mechanic is chosen by an alien AI to fix one of their ships, which they need to complete a mission of utmost importance.

Status: complete

Added: October 07, 2007

Link(s): Nifty

Comments: This is one of the best sci-fi stories I've ever read. It's deep and touching, though the reason behind the AI's mission is a little...scary.

The Sword of Aviondore by Colleen Thomas star

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Drama, Romance

Warning(s): Lemon

Length: one-shot, 18,666 words

Summary: The elves and the orcs have been at war since time began, it seems. And the elves have little love for humans, either. But when T'larin stumbles across a human female in need of rescue, she learns that humans and elves aren't as different as she previously thought.

Status: complete

Added: July 22, 2006

Comments: There's another story set in the same world here.

Novel

These are published novels that have no connection with a fandom. They probably won't be world-famous like Harry Potter.

Elemental Logic Series by Laurie J. Marks starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: T

Genre(s): Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama

Warning(s): n/a

Length: 2 novels

Summary: Zanja na'Tarwein fights with several companions to reclaim the land of Shaftal from the Sainnites after they destroy her entire tribe.

Added: May 29, 2013

Link(s): (More Information)

Comments: The link is to the first novel, but to be honest, I like Earth Logic the best. There's a scene with Zanja and her companions that is hilarious because it's told from the POV of a stranger who thinks they're very, very strange.

The Fire Logic link claims the book hasn't been released yet, but you can probably find a used copy of an older edition on eBay or half.com.

(1) Fire Logic, (2) Earth Logic

Once A Slave by Edward Sledge starstar

Type: Alternative

Rating: AO

Genre(s): Angst, Drama, Humor

Warning(s): Lemon

Summary: A man named Lark is purchased as a slave for a reclusive mage.

Added: October 07, 2007

Link(s): (More Information)

Comments: Lark's first-person narrative actually reminds of Duo Maxwell's from Gundam Wing. He's sarcastic and very witty. There are also two sequels. This story has been published, but it's currently out of print. I suggest checking eBay or half.com. The link is to the author's profile on FictionPress.com
