Non-Fanfiction Recommendations
These are published novels, online original stories, and uber Xena fanfics (which are just original stories in disguise) that I think are excellent. There's a vast mixture of ratings and genres on this page, but each listing will have information about it.

Rating Abbreviations:

- E (everyone); equivalent to "G"
- PT (pre-teen); equivalent to "PG"
- T (teen); equivalent to "PG-13"
- M (mature); equivalent to "R"
- AO (adults only); equivalent to "NC-17"

Warning Information:

- BDSM: These fanfics contain consensual bondage, domination, submission, or masochism but not necessarily all are present at once.
- Dark: These fanfics put its characters through a high amount of psychological or physical distress.
- Drug: These fanfics contain drug usage.
- Fluff: These fanfics contain moments of sickeningly sweet sappiness.
- Language: These fanfics contain a high amount of profanity or abusive language.
- Mpreg: These fanfics have at least one of the male main characters giving birth. I won't recommend a story that doesn't sound believable, though.
- Non-con: These fanfics contain incidences of non-consensual sex (rape).
- Violence: These fanfics contain graphic violence or high amounts of violence.

Recommendation Level:

star = I liked the story enough to tell others about it.
star star = I loved the story and will probably still remember large portions of it years later.

Comments: This story is hilarious; absolutely hilarious. It's a satire of uber Xena fanfics. It's also very strange. Stephanie is a former Army sergeant turned bomb diffuser who can hear cars talk (and animals both domesticated and wild). With her best friend Brittanie the Desoto, she travels to San Francisco after leaving the Army to make a new life.
Cooking On High by Creme Brulee star

Comments: French is a sociopath while Fry is a naive waitress, but they complement each other perfectly. This fanfic is very funny, actually, and French and Fry banter back and forth like they have a professional comedy routine.
The Dar and Kerry Series by Melissa Good starstar

Summary: This series is about two gay women living in contemporary Miami.

Comments: Melissa Good (Merwolf) is the genius behind the Journey of Soulmates alternative Xena series. She's also written scripts for the Xena TV show. Dar is an executive at one of the largest computer corporations in the United States and Kerry's much smaller business is acquired by them. She's all set to give up her job so that her employees won't have to suffer when Dar finds a way to keep her on staff. They find themselves growing closer against their wills, first becoming best friends, and then later becoming lovers.

Comments: There aren't words to describe how good this series is. It takes place in contemporary California and deals with many different issues people are still trying to deal with today. Comments: This is a well-written, interesting story. It's classic medieval fantasy with more descriptive violence and once incidence of rape.
The Journal Entries of Kennet R'Yal Shardik by Elf Sternberg starstar

Summary: A geneticist named Ken Shardik is approached by an alien entity that gives him the power to create his own world.

Comments: This is a story of epic proportions that's been in progress since 1990 and has been updated every year since. Many of the stories contain sex but there are many that do not. Some of the stories are gay-themed, some of them lesbian-themed, and some of them are neither. There's a little bit of everything in here, really. The basic premise of the story is this: a geneticist named Ken creates his own world and his own races of people who come to consider him their "father". It's very interesting to see how the Earthlings (or Terrans, as they're known in this story) deal with a dozen different races of animal-like people with highly-advanced technology. I'm not doing this story any justice with my comments so you'll just have to read it and see for yourself.

Comments: This is one of the best sci-fi stories I've ever read. It's deep and touching, though the reason behind the AI's mission is a little...scary.

Comments: The United States commits an act of desperation by trying to ruin the oil reserves of a certain Arabic nation. Unfortunately this backfires and ruins every oil reserve on the planet. Earth is thrown back into the Dark Ages since very few things work without oil and most countries are now under martial law.

The pulse that ruined the oil also transformed men who satisfied certain criteria into a new race of beings with extraordinary mental power. They eventually come to be known as the "Shapers", people who magically shape themselves and the world around them to their exact specifications.

Comments: Lark's first-person narrative actually reminds of Duo Maxwell's (Gundam Wing). He's sarcastic and very witty. I'm impatiently waiting for the sequel.
The Sword of Aviondore by Colleen Thomas star

Summary: The elves and the orcs have been at war since time began, it seems. And the elves have little love for humans, either. But when T'larin stumbles across a human female in need of rescue, she learns that humans and elves aren't as different as she previously thought.
