Dragon Ball/Z Recommendations
After all these years, Dragon Ball/Z is still my favorite anime. Technically I like the fanfiction more than the series (since I've seen very little of the Japanese version).
Be Careful What You Wish For by B-Chan starstar
Rating: PT
Genre: Humor
Pairings: Goku/ChiChi, Vegeta/Bulma, Gohan/Videl
Length: approx. 400+ pages
Warning(s): n/a
Summary: The Eternal Dragon is angered that he's constantly being taken away from his soap opera so he decides to teach everyone a lesson by granting them all of their wishes for a duration of seven days.
Link: Fanfiction.net

Comments: It's funny. Correction: it's hilarious. It's one of the funniest Dragon Ball Z fanfics I've read PERIOD. The things that happen to everyone during the seven-day period (most notably when Buruma and Vegeta switch genders) are great.
Claimed by B-Chan starstar
Rating: AO
Genre: Humor
Pairings: Goku/Vegeta, Goten/Trunks
Length: 1 part, approx. 126 pages
Warning(s): Lemon

Come Together by Chayron star
Rating: AO
Genre: Alternate Universe, Drama, Angst
Pairing: Vegeta/Goku
Length: 28 chapters long, approx. 150+ pages
Warning(s): violence, language, lemon.
Summary: (from AFF) Vegeta tried to get some restful sleep, but his thoughts whirled about Trunks. Never in his life had he felt so useless and helpless. He was the second strongest being in the universe, and he wasn’t even able to protect his own son.
Link: AFF

Comments: Since Chayron's native language isn't English there are some grammar oddities even with the betas, but this story is still great. Her imagination is a very fertile playground. Once you've finished, head on to the sequel.
Consuming Madness by Ash the Wanderer starstar
Rating: M
Genres: Action/Adventure, Crossover, Angst, Horror
Pairings: Vegeta/Buruma, Goku/ChiChi, Gohan/Videl
Length: approx. 284 pages.
Warning(s): Death, destruction, detailed descriptions of violence. It's very dark.
Summary: Ash's most famous fanfic. It's a crossover with Ash's Legacy stories and DBZ. Agony escapes into the DBZ world and Erik goes after her. She's recaptured, but not before she unleashes plenty of death and mayhem onto their world.
Links: Legacy | Fanifction.net

Comments: First of all, if you have a weak stomach or can't tolerate dark fanfics, then don't read this one. Agony's evil is so brilliantly portrayed in this fanfic that you find yourself wishing you were there so that you can have your own shot at killing her. The first thing she does after escaping is kill Bura (who's six at the time) and this sets a trend for the entire story. I highly recommend this one if you can take it, but there are plenty of others on this site if you can't.
Contradicting Mission by Chelsee starstar
Rating: M
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Horror
Pairings: none
Length: approx. 800+ pages.
Warning(s): Gohan is tortured throughout this fanfic.
Summary: Son Gohan is chosen by Kami Larkas to prevent a catastrophe from occuring. He, along with three others (who easily fall into the category of "enemy"), must correct this error or everything is lost.

Comments: Okay, this is probably Chelsee's most famous fanfic. When I was first introduced to her she was writing DBZ humor fanfics (which were funny, by the way). After a brief break, she started writing this back in 2000 and it took her about two years to complete, I believe. I've chosen this fanfic for my site simply because it's phenomenal. Gohan's reactions to the situations he finds himself in are on target, the characterization of his companions is flawless, and it'll have you reading into the wee hours of the night before you know it. It's long, but it's definitely worth the time.
Dirty Dancing by B-Chan starstar

Comments: This is an older story that hasn't been updated in half of forever but it's too good to pass up. There's also a side story series that goes along with it.
Indigo Spice by Beloved Animosity starstar
Rating: M
Genres: Alternate Universe, Romance, Angst
Pairing: Goku/Vegeta
Length: 24 chapters, approx. 400 pages.
Warning(s): Dark. Mpreg.
Summary: (from FF.net) With so much hatred in the world, is it possible for our two favorite Saiyajin to fall in love and stay in love?
Link: Fanfiction.net

Comments: This was brought to my attention by the author herself in a review of one of my own fanfics, I believe. I was at the point where I'd completely given up on Fanfiction.net when it came to good fanfics, but this one gave me hope that there were a few still out there that I hadn't already read.
In the Eyes of a Child by Kazie Solo star
Rating: PT
Genre: Humor
Pairing: Gohan/Videl
Length: approx. 150 pages
Warning(s): n/a
Summary: Head trauma renders Videl childlike. To what lengths will Gohan go to help her return to normal?
Link: Fanfiction.net

Comments: This fanfic is the winner of the 2002 Sennenki Fanfiction Contest (Humor section) and also the recepient of my special award. What can I say? Next to Be Careful What You Wish For this is the funniest fanfic I've read in a long, long time. The characterization's a little off (probably done so for the sake of humor), but that doesn't detract very much from the overall enjoyment value. One of my favorite moments is when Vegeta and Goku were arguing about what 1 + 1 equaled.
Maintaining by Pixelgoddess starstar
Rating: AO
Genres: Angst, Drama, Humor, Romance
Pairings: Goku/Vegeta, ChiChi/OFC
Length: approx. 200+ pages.
Warning(s): lemon, non-con, torture, violence, dark in places.
Summary: After fusing with the Potara earrings, a bond develops between Goku and Vegeta. Now, a year after the defeat of Majin Buu, Vegeta's being haunted by nightmares of Furiza and his control is slipping away. Can Goku help him, or will be become another victim of Vegeta's past?

Comments: First and foremost, ChiChi is different in this fanfic, a lot different, which is good because she doesn't annoy me as much as she usually does. Goku's still living with her even though they're divorced and it's an arrangement that works for the most part. Vegeta is having constant nightmares to the point that his he can't sleep for fear of them and his ki is steadily dropping to the point that he's no stronger than Yamucha. He also blacks out on occasion, waking up hours, or even days later, injured and with no recollection of what happened to him. This isn't the usual "Saiya-jin bonding" fanfic. There are no rituals, no instant bonds that make everything perfect. Though the two Saiya-jin do have a bond, it's completely unique while, at the same time, still maintaining the familiarity that we all know and love. At times this fic is dark, so dark that you might be squicked and/or mentally disturbed. Vegeta's nightmares are nothing to sneeze at, after all, and reality becomes no better towards the end of this fic. If you can successfully make it to the end, you can move on to the side story, Nailed, and then the sequel, Quest, and learn how the couple deals with all the lingering psychological trauma.
My Family By Trunks Briefs by Sadie Dragonfire starstar
Rating: T
Genre: Humor
Pairings: Vegeta/Yamcha/Goku, Bulma/ChiChi, Gohan/Mirai Trunks
Length: approx. 27 pages
Warning(s): strange pairings
Summary: Chibi Trunks writes an essay about his rather unconventional family that gets him into trouble at school.
Links: The Dragon's Gate | Saiyan HideAway

Comments: I found this funny fanfic when I was reading one of her Harry Potter fics. Anyway, Trunks is asked by his teacher to write about his family for a school assignment and it's supposed to be factual. Unfortunately, the teacher figures that he's lying and calls Buruma up to the school for a parent-teacher conference. Let me tell you, when you're an eight-year-old with two mothers, three fathers, and a mirai counterpart sometimes things can be pretty rough.
Quest by Pixel Goddess starstar
Rating: AO
Genres: Angst, Drama, Humor, Romance
Pairings: Goku/Vegeta, ChiChi/OFC
Length: approx. 300+ pages.
Warning(s): lemon, psychological issues.
Summary: The sequel to "Maintaining." Goku and Vegeta build a relationship and try to find new ways to overcome their problems.
Links: Pixelgoddess' Closet | AFF | Saiyan HideAway | The Vault

Comments: This fanfic isn't as dark as its prequel. There are many issues left over from Furiza's torture of both Goku and Vegeta, but together they overcome a lot of obstacles. As ChiChi and Rezu's wedding approaches, Vegeta wants nothing more than to make Goku his mate, but has no idea how to do so since Vegeta-sei was destroyed when he was so young. Then Piccolo gives him an idea...

Once you've finished this, you can go on to the short story The Joy of Giving.
